 Sirubari

sirubari is a small village nestled on the southern slopes of a redge at 1700 m above sea level . The height and aspect ensure a comfortable climate regardless of any season of the year. Pokhara, about 20 KM to the northeast, is the nearest major center. The travel time for the average group to reach the village from Pokhara, is about 5 hours, an experience in itself. The village which is inhabited entirely by the Gurung people, is small and compact with neat and clean trails connecting the mainly stone and slate built houses . Sirubari offers attractive valley views stretching away towards the Terai. A short walk above the village gives visitors  a spectacular Himalayan panorama that is hard to rival from any viewpoint in the region. The living culture and tradition of the Gurungs blended with their rich hospitality make for an unforgettable experince for any one who visits Sirubari.

Situtated 56 KM south of Pokhara the remote Gurung village of  Sirubari has been developed as a donation for cultural tourism by Nepal Tourism Board. Far from being a tacky tourist experience, this is more like a rural home stay accommodation and the meals are provided by the local farmers the only way to get there in is on foot via a four hour trek from the village of Arjunchaupari  in Syanja  on the Siddhartha highway .

The village is full of traditional stone building, including a charming gompa (Buddhist) monestray  and there's a rugged view point nearby at thumro (2300 m)  over looking the full of the Himalayan peaks.

However, few people in Sirubari speak English and you may have a problems if you droup in unannounced. The easiest way to visit is to make advance arragements with travel agent in Kathamandu or Pokhara they will arrange your accommodation and a guide, and put you on the right bus to the trail head. Otherwise contact Jim Gurung (061: 692496, 980412642) the tourism officer for the village . Two day tour cost Rs 2500.
